RESEARCH/ PROJECT 4.2
DANCERS AND CHOREOGRAPHERS AS DISTRIBUTORS ON- AND OFFLINE
Dance transforms the body into a key element for transferring and mediating music across digital and analog distribution chains. Dancers and choreographers visually express music, encouraging imitation via platforms like TikTok. Social media dancers move beyond online dance challenges, performing these in varied spaces and interacting with international audiences. Virtual Reality (VR) films frequently feature dancers, documenting or reconstructing choreography for transnational audiences.
This project investigates innovative potentials stemming from dancers' and choreographers' dissemination of Afrobeats. Ethnographic online/offline case studies focus on Berlin-based Afro dancers and choreographers and their hybrid business models, consisting of physical and virtual dance classes. They utilize Afrobeats as resources for dance and entrepreneurship, significantly popularizing the genre within Germany and beyond. An additional focus on VR films provides perspectives on East Asia.
