RESEARCH/ PROJECT 3.3

FILM FESTIVALS AND ARCHIVES AS CIRCULATION NETWORKS

This project explores festivals and archives as circulation networks facilitating the global distribution of Nigerian and Korean film and music cultures. It investigates how non-commercial circulation dynamics reproduce, reinforce, or contrast with commercial distribution dynamics and analyzes the role of digital platforms in reconfiguring circulation and distribution networks. The research examines film festivals (Busan International Film Festival, Lagos International Film Festival, Berlinale, Cannes Film Festival, and FICKIN International Film Festival Kinshasa) to understand the institutional, cultural, and economic conditions contributing to varying cultural and commercial validations of Nigerian and Korean films.

Additionally, the activities of film and music archives are examined: How do archives utilize commercial and non-commercial digital platforms to create new distribution networks for Korean and Nigerian film and music heritage? The Korean Film Archive, for instance, uses YouTube and developed KMDb, enabling free access to over 400 Korean films. A contrasting case study is Nigeria’s National Archive of Film, Video and Sound in Jos. The African Music Archives (AMA) in Mainz serves as an experimental case study through its "AMA Remix" Artists-in-Residence program.
