“Surfing the Korean Wave” Online International Summer School at Goethe University, 21-25 July 2023
The Online International Summer School on “The Korean Wave” held by the Korean Studies department and organized by Prof. Yonson Ahn, Casandra Chistinean, and Alexandra Fuchs at Goethe University of Frankfurt from 21st to 25th July 2023, has been a resounding success. The event, which aimed to inspire students in Germany and beyond to explore the ever-evolving world of Hallyu, proved to be an interesting and enriching experience for all participants.
With its virtual format, the Summer School attracted a diverse and widespread audience, transcending geographical barriers. Academics and students from various countries connected through Zoom to present, discover and discuss the various facets of the Korean Wave. The lectures, delivered by nine distinguished experts in the field, offered deep insights into the industry, production, content, and reception of Korean popular culture on a global scale. Participants had the unique opportunity to engage in lively discussions with both the speakers and fellow attendees, fostering a sense of community and knowledge-sharing.
The Summer School’s central theme of transnationalism and the globalization of Hallyu resonated strongly with the participants. From South Korean cinema to K-dramas, K-Pop, and Webtoons, each aspect was thoughtfully explored, providing attendees with a holistic understanding of the Korean Wave’s far-reaching impact. The program successfully unveiled the complex and dynamic nature of Hallyu, highlighting its profound influence both at the local and global levels.
The lineup of esteemed speakers added immense value to the Summer School. Their expertise and passion for the subject were evident in each lecture, capturing the attention and curiosity of the attendees. The collaborative effort between the organizers, speakers, and participants created an atmosphere of mutual learning and growth, contributing to the overall success of the event.
